Egg-stravaganza
Through December 2012
Location: GIA Headquarters, Carlsbad, CaliforniaThis unique gem and mineral collection showcases 850 egg-shaped pieces, collected over 40 years and carved by Master Lapidarist Dieter Jerusalem, using traditional cutting techniques he learned in Idar-Oberstein, Germany. Each piece is cut and polished to resemble a perfectly formed hen’s egg, about 58mm high. These precious gems and decorative minerals are from the finest localities in the world and include Idar-Oberstein agates; pink tourmaline from Pala, California, U.S.A.; Brazilian morganite and aquamarine; green beryl from Madagascar; Nigerian rutilated quartz; Canadian native silver in matrix; jadeite from Switzerland; Australian variscite and much more, as well as phenomenal gemstones, and several jaspers, agates, and quartz with unusual inclusions.

Artifacts from 9/11
Through early Spring 2012
Location: GIA Headquarters, Carlsbad, CaliforniaIn conjunction with the 10th anniversary of 9/11, GIA was honored to display a collection of family artifacts that survived 9/11. The items were recovered from a bank vault safety deposit box at 5 World Trade Center, a building that was badly damaged and burned for days after the attacks. While the contents of most of the safety deposit boxes were reduced to ash, a 1950s-era 14K white gold ribbon bow brooch was found intact. Its metalwork was blackened, but the 75 diamonds were in remarkably good condition and did not show any significant signs of degradation. Four other family heirlooms were also on display: two small silver mesh clutches and two gold pocket watches.
