GIA Thailand Lecture on New Mozambique Mines and Rubies

CARLSBAD, Calif. – Dec. 17, 2009 – GIA Thailand announced that its next Gemstone Gathering, “New Rubies from Mozambique,” will be held Dec. 23. Vincent Pardieu, supervisor of GIA Field Gemology, will lead the joint presentation with GIA Gemologists Pantaree Lomthong and Jitlapit Thanachakaphad.

Pardieu will discuss his travels to a recently discovered Mozambique ruby mine in the M’sawize area of Niassa Province. He will also share his experiences at another recently discovered ruby deposit in the neighboring province of Cabo Delgado, Mozambique. Pardieu obtained reference ruby samples for the GIA collection on these visits and had them analyzed by the GIA Laboratory in Bangkok.

This presentation will detail the quest for the samples, the ongoing research on the recovered gems and first-hand insight into this new gem-producing area of Mozambique.

“Because Vincent has recently returned from this three-month expedition, his report will truly provide the most current research about these newer mines and gemstones,” said Kenneth Scarratt, managing director of GIA Southeast Asia and director of the GIA Laboratory in Bangkok. “We are proud to be able to serve our constituents and students by sharing the latest findings in the world of gemology with them.”

This is the 31st Gemstone Gathering hosted by GIA Thailand. The free event will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Dec. 23 in the Murano Room of the Tawana Hotel, 80 Surawongse Road, Bangkok. Interested parties must RSVP by contacting the GIA Laboratory Bangkok at (66) 2-632-4090, info@giathai.net or the GIA Thailand campus at (66) 2-237-9575, giathai@ksc.th.com.
