Non-Cash Gifts
Also known as “in-kind” donations, gifts of gems, jewelry, books and other non-cash items are put to a variety of uses within the Institute - in Education, Research, the Museum, and Library.
Rough and cut gems help students practice identification skills to distinguish among simulants, synthetics, and natural gemstones.
Gifts of materials from known localities enable GIA to perform important research on gemstone characterization, geographic origin and treatment, and to communicate these findings in its scientific quarterly journal, Gems & Gemology.
Display quality gems, jewelry and important gemological literature serve to teach and inspire future generations.

The Historical Collection Campaign
Our newest endeavor is to build a sophisticated collection of jewelry, objects d’art and gemstones from previous periods and cultures.
- When you donate part of your own treasured collection to this collection, you will be helping to tell the fascinating story of gemstones and jewelry through the ages to people from around the world.
- To accurately document historical periods, we hope to acquire pieces that exhibit:
- Hallmarks and/or maker’s marks
- Clear provenance that documents the history of the piece
- Signature elements such as style, techniques and materials of a particular period and/or culture
